Tony's Racing report 2nd Sept
---------------------------------------------
If drifting around a 220 acre lake in no wind is your idea of heaven, then
you missed a treat on Thursday. Around ten racers gathered on the start
line, most of which, it was noted had drifted across the line before the
start. But then the race official (and participant) had once again tried to
strangle himself with his stop watch and whistle, and had inadvertantly
stopped his watch by mistake at the one minute gun. So felt disinclined to
disqualify threequaters of the fleet.
The first leg that was suppposed to be a beat turned out to be a tight
reach(wind shift)
There was a faint breeze to propel us along and Tim was soon out in front
with compeditive Skye just behind , both pumping like crazy as if their
very lives depended on it
( Forgive my sceptism, but I always thought that windsurfing was the art of
harnessing the wind to aid propultion, if there isn't any of that commodity
available. WHY THE HELL BOTHER!) In this case it ios about generating your
own wind, and that's not farting either!!!
It was soon apparant that as the wind dropped to a total void, that it was
going to be a pumping battle between the two leaders. With the exception of
Chris Burns, the rest of the fleet ground to a halt. A few attempts at
tandem downwind drifting by Mike and Mark failed miserably . Onlookers on
the bank (four ducks and a goose) watched in facination as this impression
of an oversized butterfly, which was drifting no where
At the finish Dave Skye upped his pumping rate to 2 pumps a second to sneak
past Tim (was it worth it? Well he seemed to think it was)
Chris Burns finished some time later, in the mean time at a given signal
from the race officer, everyone else dropped their sails and paddled home
in a total flat calm
Before we started we had considered that due to the light airs. Croquet
might be a better option and this we might well have done, had not the
Flamingos run off and the hedgehogs unrolled themselves and left the
court
I suppose we could have used Mallets and balls, but its not nearly so much
fun!!!
Next week is the last race of the season, well conditions can't get worse!
